1891 Liberty Seated Silver Quarter — Philadelphia Mint
1891 Liberty Seated Silver Quarter — Philadelphia Mint
Own a classic piece of American numismatic history with this 1891 Liberty Seated Silver Quarter, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the final year of the historic Liberty Seated Quarter series.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Seated Quarter was produced from 1838 through 1891, making it one of the longest-running designs in United States silver coinage. The series reflects more than five decades of American history, spanning westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the nation's emergence as a major industrial power.
The obverse features Lady Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a shield inscribed LIBERTY and a staff topped with a Phrygian cap. Thirteen stars surround the design, representing the original thirteen American colonies, with the date 1891 positioned beneath Liberty.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch. A ribbon bearing the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears above the eagle, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. surround the design.
The 1891 Liberty Seated Quarter is a final-year issue, making it particularly appealing to collectors of historic United States coinage. The following year, the Liberty Seated design was replaced by Charles E. Barber's new quarter design, marking the end of an important chapter in American numismatic history.
Struck in 90% silver, this historic quarter combines precious-metal content, classic American artistry, and the significance of being among the final coins produced in the Liberty Seated Quarter series.
