Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Seated Quarter was produced from 1838 through 1891 and remains one of the most recognizable designs in early United States silver coinage. The obverse features Lady Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a shield inscribed LIBERTY and a staff topped with a Phrygian cap. Thirteen stars surround the design, representing the original thirteen American colonies, with the date 1875 positioned beneath Liberty.

The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch. A ribbon bearing the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears above the eagle, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. surround the design.

The 1875 issue represents the return to the standard No Arrows design following the temporary use of arrows beside the date in 1873 and 1874. Those arrows had indicated a small increase in the authorized weight of the quarter, which remained in effect after the arrows were removed.
