1860 Indian Head Cent — Rounded Bust Variety
1860 Indian Head Cent — Rounded Bust Variety
Own an interesting piece of early American numismatic history with this 1860 Indian Head Cent — Rounded Bust Variety, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the final years leading up to the American Civil War.
The Indian Head Cent series was produced from 1859 through 1909 and remains one of the most recognizable and widely collected designs in classic United States small-cent coinage.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the Indian Head Cent features a portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Native American-style feathered headdress. The design became an enduring symbol of 19th-century American coinage and circulated through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the nation's rapid industrial expansion.
The 1860 Rounded Bust variety is distinguished by the rounded shape of Liberty's bust truncation. This design characteristic separates it from the Pointed Bust variety also associated with 1860 Indian Head Cents.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a feathered headdress with a band inscribed LIBERTY. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the portrait, with the date 1860 positioned beneath Liberty.
The reverse displays the denomination ONE CENT within an oak wreath, topped by a Union shield. This design was introduced in 1860, replacing the laurel wreath reverse used on the first-year 1859 Indian Head Cent.
The 1860 Indian Head Cent was struck in a copper-nickel composition, giving it a lighter appearance and greater hardness than the bronze Indian Head Cents introduced in 1864.
With an original mintage of 20,566,000 business strikes across the 1860 issue, the coin represents an important early date in the Indian Head Cent series.
Whether collected as part of a complete Indian Head Cent collection, an early American small-cent type set, or a collection of pre-Civil War United States coinage, the 1860 Rounded Bust Indian Head Cent offers an appealing combination of historical significance, distinctive design, and numismatic interest.
