1854-O Liberty Seated Silver Quarter — Arrows at Date

Own a distinctive piece of pre-Civil War American numismatic history with this 1854-O Liberty Seated Silver Quarter, struck at the historic New Orleans Mint and featuring the short-lived Arrows at Date design.

The Liberty Seated Quarter series was produced from 1838 through 1891 and remains one of the most recognizable designs in classic United States silver coinage. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the series circulated through decades of American history, including westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the nation's industrial development.

The 1854-O Liberty Seated Quarter belongs to an important transitional period in American monetary history. Under the Coinage Act of 1853, the United States reduced the authorized weight of circulating silver denominations below the dollar to help prevent these coins from disappearing from everyday commerce.

To identify coins struck under the new weight standard, the Mint placed arrows on either side of the date. On Liberty Seated Quarters, this distinctive design appeared with rays around the eagle in 1853, while the rays were removed for 1854.

The obverse features Lady Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a shield inscribed LIBERTY and a staff topped with a Phrygian cap. Thirteen stars surround the design, representing the original American colonies, while arrows flank the date 1854.

The reverse displays a heraldic American eagle with a shield upon its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. surround the design, while the O mint mark identifies production at the New Orleans Mint.

The New Orleans Mint played an important role in supplying coinage to the American South during the 19th century. Coins from this historic branch mint remain especially appealing to collectors of early United States silver.

With an original mintage of 1,484,000 business strikes, the 1854-O Liberty Seated Quarter offers collectors an interesting combination of Southern branch-mint history and a short-lived transitional design.

Struck in 90% silver, this historic quarter contains approximately 0.1808 troy ounces of pure silver and represents an appealing addition to collections of Liberty Seated coinage, New Orleans Mint issues, and classic American silver quarters.
