1854-O Liberty Seated Silver Dime — Arrows at Date
1854-O Liberty Seated Silver Dime — Arrows at Date
Own a distinctive piece of pre-Civil War American numismatic history with this 1854-O Liberty Seated Silver Dime, struck at the historic New Orleans Mint during an important transitional period in United States silver coinage.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Seated Dime series was produced from 1837 through 1891. Its classic design circulated through decades of American history, including westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the nation's rapid industrial development.
The 1854-O issue features the popular Arrows at Date design, introduced following the Coinage Act of 1853. This legislation reduced the authorized weight of circulating silver denominations below the dollar to help keep silver coins in everyday commerce.
Arrows were placed beside the date on Liberty Seated Dimes in 1853 and 1854 to distinguish coins struck under the new weight standard. Their removal in 1855 makes the Arrows at Date design a short-lived and historically significant type.
The obverse features Lady Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a shield inscribed LIBERTY and a staff topped with a Phrygian cap. Thirteen stars surround the design, representing the original American colonies, while arrows flank the date 1854.
The reverse displays the denomination ONE DIME within a decorative wreath, surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The O mint mark identifies production at the New Orleans Mint, an important Southern branch mint that operated during the 19th century.
Struck in 90% silver, the 1854-O Liberty Seated Dime combines precious-metal content, historic American artistry, and the appeal of a classic New Orleans Mint issue.
Whether collected as part of a Liberty Seated Dime series, a New Orleans Mint collection, or a broader United States type set, this 1854-O dime represents a memorable chapter in American monetary history.
