1836 Capped Bust Silver Half Dime — Philadelphia Mint
1836 Capped Bust Silver Half Dime — Philadelphia Mint
Own a remarkable piece of early American numismatic history with this 1836 Capped Bust Silver Half Dime, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the presidency of Andrew Jackson.
The Capped Bust Half Dime was produced from 1829 through 1837 and represents one of the classic early designs of United States silver coinage. These small silver coins circulated during an important period of American expansion, commerce, and monetary development.
Designed by William Kneass and adapted from John Reich's earlier Capped Bust design, the series features a distinctive portrait of Liberty and a traditional American eagle motif.
The obverse displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a soft cap secured by a band inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, representing the original American colonies, with the date 1836 positioned beneath.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 5 C. surround the design, identifying the coin's five-cent denomination.
The 1836 Capped Bust Half Dime was produced during the final years of the series, shortly before the introduction of the Liberty Seated Half Dime in 1837. Its early federal design, small size, and 90% silver composition make it an appealing collectible.
Unlike the modern five-cent nickel, the Half Dime was struck from silver and served as an important small-denomination coin in early American commerce.
Whether collected as part of a complete Capped Bust Half Dime series, an early United States silver coin collection, or a broader numismatic type set, this 1836 issue offers a tangible connection to nearly two centuries of American history.
