1944 Jefferson Silver War Nickel — 35% Silver
1944 Jefferson Silver War Nickel — Philadelphia Mint
Own a fascinating piece of World War II-era American numismatic history with this 1944 Jefferson Silver War Nickel, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during one of the most significant periods in United States history.
The Jefferson Nickel was introduced in 1938, replacing the Buffalo Nickel and honoring Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Designed by Felix Schlag, the series remains one of America's longest-running coinage designs.
During World War II, nickel became an important strategic material used in military manufacturing. To conserve this essential metal for the war effort, the United States Mint temporarily changed the composition of the five-cent coin beginning in October 1942.
The resulting Silver War Nickels, produced through 1945, were struck from a special alloy containing 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. These coins are the only circulating Jefferson Nickels issued with silver content.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, accompanied by the inscriptions IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date 1944.
The reverse displays Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, with the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM, MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
A distinctive feature of wartime nickels is the large mint mark positioned above Monticello. The Philadelphia Mint used the letter P, marking the first time that a P mint mark appeared on a regularly circulating United States coin.
With its historic wartime origins, unique silver composition, and recognizable design, the 1944 Jefferson Silver War Nickel is an appealing addition to collections of American silver coins, World War II memorabilia, and United States numismatics.
