Introduced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, the Lincoln Cent marked a major milestone in United States coinage. It was the first regular-issue circulating American coin to feature the portrait of an actual historical person.
Designed by Victor David Brenner, the Lincoln Wheat Cent features a right-facing portrait of President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, accompanied by the inscriptions IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date 1909.
The reverse displays two wheat stalks framing the denomination ONE CENT and the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with E PLURIBUS UNUM positioned above.
One of the most distinctive features of the original 1909 issue is the presence of the designer's initials VDB at the bottom of the reverse, between the wheat stalks. The initials were removed shortly after production began following public controversy over their prominence, making the original VDB design a historically significant first-year variety.
