1892 Barber Half Dollar — Philadelphia Mint
1892 Barber Half Dollar — Philadelphia Mint
Own a classic piece of American numismatic history with this 1892 Barber Half Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the inaugural year of the Barber Half Dollar series.
Designed by Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, the Barber Half Dollar was introduced in 1892, replacing the long-running Liberty Seated Half Dollar. The design remained in production through 1915 and became a familiar part of American commerce during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath and a headband inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, representing the original thirteen American colonies.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch, with a shield upon its breast. The design is surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR.
Struck in 90% silver, the 1892 Barber Half Dollar is a desirable collectible for its first-year-of-issue status, classic American design, and historical significance as the beginning of one of the nation's most recognizable silver coin series.
