The Liberty Seated Quarter series was produced from 1838 through 1891 and represents one of the longest-running designs in classic United States silver coinage. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the series reflects the artistic traditions and national symbolism of early American currency.
The obverse features Lady Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a shield inscribed LIBERTY and a staff topped with a Phrygian cap. Thirteen stars surround the design, representing the original American colonies, while the date 1874 appears beneath Liberty.
A distinctive feature of this issue is the pair of arrows positioned on either side of the date. These arrows were used in 1873 and 1874 to indicate a slight increase in the authorized weight of the silver quarter.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch. A ribbon bearing the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears above the eagle, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. surrounding the design.
