The obverse features Lady Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a pole topped with a Phrygian cap in one hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in the other. Thirteen stars surround the design, representing the original thirteen American colonies.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL.
The 1856 issue belongs to the No Motto, With Arrows Removed design period, featuring the original seated Liberty design without arrows beside the date or the IN GOD WE TRUST motto above the eagle.
